Potatoes in last week…bit late I think

With weather reports saying that it will be cold with night freezes, I thought it was best to put the potatoes in the greenhouse for now.  They are Charlottes and I planted them a couple of days ago.   Put them in a mixture of sieved veg compost and sieved farmyard manure with a bit of homemade compost.  Will put them outside after the frosts.

Spring is here

Things are starting to grow quickly now in the garden.  It has been too wet to do any weeding so now it is depressing how much the weeds are taking over…  although many of them do look pretty.

Meanwhile my hostas are growing back.

I am really pleased with this.  I love hostas but every hosta that I have planted, and there have been a lot, has been eaten by slugs and snails.   I have used all kinds of barriers and treatments, but they all got killed off.  This time I have two type in a pot with copper tape around it and a water moat and gravel around it and no overhanging branches or plants.   Finally I am winning the slug and snail war.  The hostas are looking good.

Also in bloom is my favourite plant my flaming pieris.  I have not added an more acid compost but it seems to be thriving in my garden.

I know that spring is here when I see my pieris in bloom.  It puts a smile on my face no matter how glum I feel.

Well the sun is out and I need to do some sunbathing/mediatation by lying with my cat next to my pond.   It is finally looking good and clear after I found a treatment for blankweed and algae that has worked.

Now I can watch the newts and clouds above.  Life is good.

Seedlings in the greenhouse

About 3 weeks ago I used some sieved compost (using kitchen sieve as the commercial compost was not nice) mixed with some vermiculite and a little homemade compost, ready for my new seeds.  I sowed tomatoes, peppers, shallots and peas.

I kept them on the windowsill with a plastic roof  but now they are too big for the roof so time to get them in the greenhouse.  Fortunately it has been dry for a few days and this gave me time to clear out the greenhouse and do some cleaning.

They are now in the greenhouse ready to grow some more before I plant out.  I also need to finish putting compost on the beds before they go outside.  Nearly finished the greenhouse, although I still need to do some more cleaning of the glass.
